W&L WRESTLING TAKES FIFTH AT CENTENNIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS (2/17)
GETTYSBURG, Pa.. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team competed in the Centennial Conference Championships hosted by Gettysburg College on Saturday. The Generals finished fifth out of eight squads.
Ursinus took the team championship with 85.5 points and was followed by Muhlenberg (74.5), Johns Hopkins (61.0), McDaniel (50.0), W&L (48.0), Stevens Tech (39.0), Gettysburg (30.0) and Kings Point (23.5).
On the day, the Blue and White had one runner-up finish, three third-place finishes and one fourth-place finish.
Junior Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) finished as the runner-up at 165 pounds. Boniello posted a technical fall over Kings Point’s Trevor Muhler (17-1) in the first round and an 8-3 triumph over Mike Schwager of Ursinus, before getting pinned by Stevens Tech’s Brandon MacWhinnie (1:36) in the championship bout. MacWhinnie was named the Centennial Conference Wrestler of the Year.
Juniors Jesse Sataloff (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) and Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) and sophomore John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) all placed third, while junior David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) took fourth place.
Sataloff (174 lbs) pinned Aaron Balk of Gettysburg (1:30) in the first round, was pinned by McDaniel’s Drew Winfield (2:57) in the semifinals and defeated Troy McGuinness of Kings Point, 3-2, in the third-place match.
Adamson (197) had a major decision, 17-7, over Ferris Bond of McDaniel in the first round, was then defeated by Muhlenburg’s Matt Loesch, 9-1, in the semifinals and bounced back to defeat Stevens Tech’s James Roarty, 11-4, to finish third.
At the heavyweight, Christopher downed McDaniel’s Ryan Deiter, 5-2, in the first round, was defeated by Joe Tartar of Muhlenberg, 5-1, but responded with a 4-1 win over Jonathon Freeman of Johns Hopkins to take the bronze.
Shubick, competing at 133 pounds, was victorious in his first round match-up, pinning Michael Sumner of Johns Hopkins in 4:50, before being pinned by Ursinus’ Trevor Beard (4:51) in the semifinal. He then lost to McDaniel’s Steven Colasuonno, 5-3, in the third-place bout.
The Generals conclude their 2006-07 season with an 8-3 record and will return all but one wrestler in 2007-08.

W&L WRESTLING POSTS 21-15 WIN OVER APPRENTICE
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team defeated Newport News Apprentice School, 21-15, on Saturday morning at the Warner Center.
With the victory, the Generals improve to 8-3, which is the most wins in a season since the 1986-1987 campaign (9-5).
Juniors David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) and Jesse Sataloff (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) and freshman Sammy Brusca (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) all registered wins in the meet.
Shubick, wrestling at 133 pounds, defeated Charles Owuzu, 12-8, while Sataloff (184 lbs) took a 4-2 victory over Justin Gillard (Virginia Beach, Va./Green Run). Brusca defeated Kevin Hill (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith), 8-6, in the 125-pound bout.
The Generals return to the mat on Saturday when they compete in the Centennial Conference Championships hosted by Gettysburg College at 11:00 am.

W&L SHAKES UP CENTENNIAL WITH A PAIR OF WINS (2/3)
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team upset the top two teams in the Centennial Conference on Saturday morning. The Generals took a 21-17 win over previously-unbeaten No. 30 Ursinus and also posted a 18-16 triumph over Muhlenberg.
W&L’s win also snaps Ursinus’ 27-game unbeaten streak in conference action.
Both contests were not decided until the heavyweight bout, as the Generals trailed the Mules, 15-16, and were tied 18-18 with the Bears, entering that match-up. Sophomore John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Card. Gibbons) downed Muhlenberg’s Joe Tartar (Lehighton, Pa./Lehighton), 3-2, and Ursinus’ Matt Williams (Washington Crossing, Pa./Valley Forge Mil.), 6-5, to give the Blue and White both of its victories.
Juniors Peter Lawrence (Greenwich, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee), Jesse Sataloff (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) and Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) also went 2-0 on the day.
Lawrence, wrestling at 157 pounds, pinned UC’s Sean Donahoe (Westwood, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) in 2:13 and defeated Matt Friedman (Robbinsville, N.J./Lawrence) of Muhlenberg, 10-4. Sataloff (174 lbs) defeated Justin Fitch (Baltimore, Md./Boys’ Latin School) of Muhlenberg, 8-4, and also posted an 8-7 win over Ursinus’ John McCarthy (Warren, R.I./Tabor Academy). Boniello (165 lbs) took wins over the Mules’ David Lann, 3-1, and pinned UC’s Mike Schwager (Bechtelsville, Pa./Boyertown) in 5:58.

JOHNS HOPKINS SQUEAKS BY GENERALS WRESTLING, 18-17 (1/27)
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Johns Hopkins eked out an 18-17 victory over the Washington and Lee wrestling team in a Centennial Conference dual meet on Saturday afternoon.
W&L led 17-15 going into the final bout of the day, but JHU’s Tyler Schmidt (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) defeated junior Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s), 5-0, in the 197-pound weight class to give the Blue Jays (4-9, 2-3) the one-point win.
Freshman Sammy Brusca (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep), and juniors Peter Lawrence (Greenwich, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) and Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) all recorded wins in the meet.
Brusca, competing at 125 pounds, took a major decision, 17-2, over Michael Sumner (Orange, Conn./Hopkins School). Lawrence (157 pounds) registered an 8-6 win over James Crumlish (Blue Bell, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy), while Boniello scored a 5-2 victory at 165 pounds over Kyle Keane (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip).
Junior David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) also tallied points for the Blue and White with his win by forfeit at 133 pounds.
The Generals (5-3, 3-2) return to the mat on Saturday when they host McDaniel, Muhlenberg and Ursinus at the W&L Quad. The meet will begin at 11 a.m.

GENERALS WRESTLING DOWNS SOUTHERN VIRGINIA, 48-6 (1/24)
BUENA VISTA, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team defeated Route 60-rival Southern Virginia, 48-6, in a dual meet on Wednesday evening.
Junior David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook), junior Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s) and sophomore John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) all recorded pins in the meet. Shubick, competing at 133 pounds, defeated Brandon Flood (3:15), while Adamson pinned Adam Welker (4:48) in the 197-pound bout. Christopher took the heavyweight match with a pin of Steve Homolya in a time of 1:00.
The Generals return to the mat on Saturday when they host Johns Hopkins at 2 pm.

W&L WRESTLING GOES 2-1 AT KINGS POINT QUAD (1/20)
The Washington and Lee wrestling team went 2-1 at the Kings Point Quadrangular on Saturday afternoon. The Generals defeated Centennial-rivals McDaniel, 26-15, and Stevens Tech, 30-11, but fell to the host Mariners, 16-23.

GENERALS WRESTLING HOSTS W&L TOURNAMENT
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team finished third out of eight teams at the W&L Tournament held on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center.
Muhlenberg won the team title with 86.0 points, followed by Johns Hopkins (77.5), W&L (75.5), Scranton (47.5), Washington & Jefferson (34.5), Maryville (25.0), Southern Virginia (18.0) and Waynesburg (10.00). Scranton 149-pounder Donnell Young was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler.
The Generals were paced by three championship finishes and a pair of runner-up placings.
Freshman Sammy Brusca (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) went 2-0 overall to win the championship of the 125-pound weight class. Brusca pinned (4:28) Muhlenberg’s Mike Tenenhaus in the championship match.
Junior 165-pounder Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) also went 2-0 overall to win his weight class. Boniello downed Scranton’s Steve Tatum in the finals by a score of 3-1.
Junior Jesse Sataloff (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) claimed the championship of the 174-pound bracket by winning a trio of matches, including an 11-2 decision over Pat Wilson of Washington & Jefferson in the championship match.
Junior David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) fell to Billy Hall of Muhlenberg in the championship match of the 133-pound weight class, while sophomore Rob Terrin (Baltimore, Md./Friends) was defeated in the championship match of the 141-pound bracket by Marco Priolo of Johns Hopkins.
The Generals return to action on Saturday as they travel to King’s Point, N.Y., to participate in the Merchant Marines Tournament at 10:00 am.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team went 2-1 at the Gettysburg Quadrangular on Saturday afternoon at the Bream Gymnasium. The Generals defeated Centennial-rival Gettysburg, 27-19, and Waynesburg, 43-12, but fell to Washington & Jefferson, 28-15.
W&L (2-1, 1-0) was led by junior David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook), who went 3-0 on the afternoon with one win coming on a forfeit. Shubick, competing at 133 pounds, beat Waynesburg’s Abdul Yuseff, 12-5, and Richard Masella of Gettysburg on a technical fall, 18-2.
Freshman Sammy Brusca (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) also went 3-0 on the day with all three of his wins coming by virtue of forfeit.

The Washington and Lee wrestling team competed at the Fall Brawl hosted by Ursinus on Saturday morning. No team scores were kept, but the Generals had two competitors finish in the top four.

W&L WRESTLING IN ACTION AT SOUTHERN VIRGINIA KNIGHT OPEN (11/4)
BUENA VISTA, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team opened its 2006-07 season by competing at the Knight Open hosted by Southern Virginia on Saturday morning in Buena Vista, Va. The Generals posted six individual championships in their opening competition.
Senior Max Courtney (Jeffersonville, Pa./LaSalle College), juniors Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s), Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers), David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) and Erick Gagne (Philadelphia, Pa./William Penn Charter), and sophomore Rob Terrin (Baltimore, Md./Friends) all placed first in their weight classes.
Courtney claimed victory in the 184-pound weight class, while Adamson was the individual champion at 197 pounds. Boniello earned the individual title at the 165-pound weight class and Shubick placed first at 133-pounds. Gagne and Terrin were champions of the 149- and 141-weight classes, respectively.
The Generals return to the mat on Sat., Nov. 18 when they travel to Collegeville, Pa., to take part in the Ursinus Invitational. The competition begins at 9:30 am.
