VIRGINIA WESLEYAN DEFEATS HARDIN-SIMMONS, 2-1

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior forward Katie Barg (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) scored a goal and assisted on another to lift Virginia Wesleyan to a 2-1 win over Hardin-Simmons in the NCAA Tournament South Regional at Washington and Lee University. The win puts Virginia Wesleyan into the "Sweet 16".

Barg set up the game's first score by lofting a corner kick in front of goal which was headed in by senior defender Julia Green (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) with 21:15 gone-by.

The Marlins (19-2-2) extended their lead to 2-0 on Barg's unassisted goal just 2:32 into the second period.

Hardin-Simmons (16-4) climbed to within 2-1 at the 80:06 mark when freshman midfielder Whitney Piendak (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) scored off an assist by freshman defender Calli Wood (Coppell, Texas/Coppell), but could not come up with the equalizing goal.

Sophomore Laura Wiederwax (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Marlins, recording three saves. HSU sophomore Rachel Goold (Everett, Wash./Lynwood) spent all 90 minutes in goal for the Cowgirls, notching seven saves.

The loss ended a 15-game winning streak for Hardin-Simmons. Virginia Wesleyan will advance to the regional championship game on Sunday, where it faces host Washington and Lee. The match is slated to begin at 1:00 pm.
