ROANOKE ENDS W&L'S SEASON IN ODAC SEMIS ON PENALTY KICKS
LYNCHBURG,
Va. -- The third-seeded Washington and Lee women's soccer team saw its
season end as second-seeded Roanoke College defeated the Generals, 1-1,
on penalty kicks (4-2) in the ODAC Tournament Semifinals on Friday afternoon
in Lynchburg, Va.
W&L (11-4-1) took a 1-0 lead with 18:04 gone-by as
sophomore midfielder Heather Coleman (Blackwood, N.J./Triton Regional)
notched an unassisted tally. Roanoke's Tiffany Jones countered with
a goal off an assist from Jill Hoffmeister at the 50:46 mark to knot
the score at 1-1. The two teams played through a pair of overtime periods
before the Maroons (15-3-1) advanced 4-2 on penalty kicks.
Freshman Abigail Pfeffer (Essex, Conn./Portsmouth Abbey)
posted six saves in goal for the Generals, while Christine Torzewski
made four saves in goal for Roanoke.
Roanoke will face top-seeded Lynchburg College in the
tournament finals on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 pm.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer
team advanced to the ODAC Tournament semifinals for the 13th consecutive
season with a 2-1 victory over Randolph-Macon in quarterfinal action
on the Liberty Hall Fields on Tuesday afternoon.
W&L (11-4) scored the first goal of the game at the 20:23 mark as
senior midfielder Kate Bidwell (Pensacola, Fla./Escambia) tallied her
team-leading 10th goal of the season off an assist from freshman forward
Maggie Hope (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) The Yellow Jackets
tied the game at 1-1 as senior midfielder Lisa Weitzel (Landenberg,
Pa./Notre Dame (Md.)) notched an unassisted goal at the 33:46 mark.
W&L freshman midfielder Liz Clarke (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill)
scored what proved to be the game-winning goal just 2:30 into the second
half. Sophomore forward Fontaine Marcoux (Washington, D.C./Potomac)
recorded the assist on Clarke's goal. For Marcoux, it was her 12th assist
of the season and set a single-season record for assists at W&L.
W&L freshman goalkeeper Abigail Pfeffer (Essex, Conn./Portsmouth
Abbey School) recorded four saves to earn the victory. Yellow Jacket
(6-11-1) sophomore keeper Ashley Seal (Richmond, Va./Collegiate School)
made four saves in the losing effort.
The Generals will play Roanoke in an ODAC semifinal game on Friday at
3:00 pm. The match will be played at Lynchburg, who is the No. 1 seed
in the tournament.

SALEM, Va. -- Roanoke used one first half goal and two
goals late in the second half to defeat Washington and Lee, 3-0, in
women's soccer action.
The Maroons jumped on the board at the 38:39 mark as Shelly Olds scored
off an assist from Jess Germano to give Roanoke a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Roanoke (14-3, 9-2 ODAC) put the game away late in the second half as
Jill Hoffmeister scored two goals in just over two minutes. She scored
the first with 81:27 to play and came back to tally her second goal
of the game with 83:29 to play off an assist from Kathryn Steffens.
W&L (10-4, 9-2 ODAC) freshman goalkeeper Abigail Pfeffer (Essex,
Conn./Portsmouth Abbey School) made five saves. Roanoke goalkeeper Christine
Torzewski made five saves to earn the shutout.
The Generals return to action when they host a first round game of the
ODAC Tournament on Tuesday. Their opponent and time of the game will
be announced Sunday.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Washington and Lee senior midfielder
Kate Bidwell (Pensacola, Fla./Escambia) tallied her team-leading ninth
goal of the season to lead the Generals to a 1-0 victory at Guilford
on Tuesday afternoon.
The victory marked the eighth consecutive season that W&L has won
at least 10 games.
Bidwell, who now needs one more goal to move into a tie for third place
all-time at W&L with 33 career goals, took a cross from sophomore
forward Susannah Hewlett (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville) and
scored at the 44:03 mark.
W&L (10-3, 9-1 ODAC) freshman goalkeeper Abigail Pfeffer (Essex,
Conn./Portsmouth Abbey School) made two saves to earn her second shutout
of the season. Guilford (7-10-1, 3-7 ODAC) goalkeeper Brandee Adams
made 10 saves in the losing effort.

Merry McConnochie (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) scored with
1:49 to play in double overtime to lead the Tartans to a 1-0 victory
over Washington and Lee in women's soccer action on the Liberty Hall
Fields Saturday afternoon.
Both teams had several scoring opportunities, but were done in by stellar
play from both goalkeepers.
W&L (9-3) freshman goalkeeper Abigail Pfeffer (Essex, Conn.Portsmouth
Abbey) made 14 saves on the afternoon. Carnegie Mellon (8-2-1) junior
keeper Maya Nigrosh (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) made nine saves.

team scored three first half goals and cruised to a 5-2 victory at Hollins
(2-8-1, 1-7-1 ODAC) on Wednesday afternoon.
Junior midfielder Jenny Thomas (High Point, N.C./Central) tallied two
goals for W&L. The goals were the first two of the season for the
co-captain. Senior midfielders Kate Bidwell (Pensacola, Fla./Escambia)
and Drew Powers (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) and freshman forward
Maggie Hope (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) all tallied one
goal.
Bidwell also tallied two assists on the afternoon. Sophomore forwards
Susannah Hewlett (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville) and Fontaine

scored the Generals first goal off an assist from sophomore forward
Fontaine Marcoux (Washington, D.C./Potomac) eight minutes into the contest.
It was Hope's third goal in as many games. W&L took a 2-0 lead just
one minute later as Marcoux tallied an
unassisted goal. Sophomore midfielder Heather Coleman (Blackwood, N.J./Triton
Regional) made the score 3-0 as she scored at the 16:00 mark off an
assist from senior midfielder Kate Bidwell (Pensacola, Fla./Escambia).
Bidwell tallied her team-high seventh goal of the season at the 82:00
mark for W&L's final goal of the afternoon. Hope recorded the assist.

W&L scored the game's first goal at the 9:36 mark as freshman forward
Maggie Hope (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) headed in a cross
from sophomore forward Fontaine Marcoux (Washington, D.C./Potomac). For
Hope, it was her second goal in as many days. It was also Marcoux's team-leading
eighth assist.
The Battling Bishops (6-3-1) tied the game at 1-1 at the 37:40 mark as
junior forward Kristi McGuire (Marlboro, Md./Frederick Douglas) scored
off an assist from junior defender Katie Hodge (Newport News, Va./Warwick).
NCWC scored the game-winner with 74:47 gone by as junior midfielder Caitlin
Sanderson (Neptune, N.J./St. Rose) tallied a goal off a pass from senior

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee freshman forward Maggie Hope (Charlotte,
N.C./Charlotte Country Day) scored her first collegiate goal with 2:01
remaining in the first overtime period to lead the Generals to their sixth
consecutive victory. It is W&L's longest winning streak since opening
the 1998 season with six straight wins.
Hope scored her goal after Virginia Wesleyan freshman goalkeeper Sabrina
Hurczyn (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) tried to clear the ball from
just outside the box. However, her attempt deflected off Hope and rolled
into the goal.
W&L (6-1, 6-1 ODAC), which was the eighth ranked team in the South
Region this week, saw freshman goalkeeper Emily Barker (Clifton, Va./Mount
Vernon) make five saves on the afternoon. Hurczyn made seven saves for
the Marlins (7-3, 4-1), who lost for the first time in conference play
this season and were the sixth ranked team in the South Region this week.
The Generals outshot the Marlins, 12-6.

Sweet Briar, 37-0, but managed only four goals in a 4-0 victory on Monday
afternoon on the Liberty Hall Fields. It was W&L's fifth consecutive
victory.
Senior midfielder Kate Bidwell (Pensacola, Fla./Escambia) opened the scoring
just 57 seconds into the game when her cross from the left corner deflected
off a Vixen defender and into the goal. For Bidwell, it was her sixth
goal in as many games. Freshman midfielder Martha Allgood (Atlanta, Ga./The
Lovett School) gave the Generals a 2-0 lead at the 17:44 mark when she
scored after sophomore forward Susannah Hewlett's (Charlottesville,Va./Charlottesville)
shot deflected to her off the post.
W&L (5-1, 5-1 ODAC) put two more goals on the board in the second
half. Freshman forward Caroline Francht (New Hope, Pa./Hun School) scored
her first collegiate goal at the 55:04 mark off assists from sophomore
midfielder Heather Coleman (Blackwood, N.J./Triton Regional) and junior
midfielder Jenny Thomas (High Point, N.C./Central). Freshman midfielder

on the board at the 9:06 mark when she scored her fifth goal in as many
games off an assist from sophomore forward Fontaine Marcoux (Washington,
D.C./Potomac). W&L put its second goal on the board when sophomore
forward Susannah Hewlett (Charlottesville, Va./Charlottesville) scored
her first goal of the season off an assist from Marcoux.
The Generals put two more goals on the board in the second half. Hewlett
tallied her second goal of the afternoon at the 57:49 mark off an assist
from senior midfielder Drew Powers (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School). The
WildCats would get on the board with 73:16 gone by when junior midfielder
Lindsay Kinsler (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) converted a penalty
kick. Marcoux completed the scoring when she scored her fourth goal of
the season with 79:22 gone by. Freshman forward Caroline Francht (New

team scored four first half goals en route to a 4-1 victory over previously
undefeated Bridgewater on the Liberty Hall Fields on Tuesday afternoon.
The Generals (3-1, 3-1 ODAC) fell behind early as Eagle sophomore forward
Diana Bolard (Sykesville, Md./South Carroll) scored just 8:02 into the
game off an assist from junior forward Sarah Pritchett (Wolftown, Va./St.Anne's
Belfield).
W&L responded when senior midfielder Kate Bidwell (Pensacola, Fla./Escambia)
scored her fourth goal of the season at the 17:15 mark. Sophomore Fontaine
Marcoux (Washington, D.C./Potomac) the reigning ODAC Player of the Week,
then put two goals on the board in less than three minutes. She tallied
her first goal off an assist from freshman defender Romney Willson (Roanoke,
Va./Patrick Henry) with 28:25 gone by in the first half. Marcoux then
beat the Bridgewater goalkeeper at the 31:10 mark for her second goal
of the game. Sophomore midfielder Meghan Hayde (Massapequa, N.Y./St. Anthony)
scored her first goal of the season with 33:34 gone by in the first half
to close out the scoring.

W&L WOMEN'S SOCCER KNOCKS OFF EASTERN MENNONITE,

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team won its
second consecutive game as it defeated Eastern Mennonite on Saturday afternoon,
3-2.
The Generals fell behind early as Becky Yoder scored in the 29th minute
of action. W&L tied the game at 1-1 one less than two minutes later
as sophomore midfielder Heather Coleman (Blackwood, N.J./Triton Regional)
scored off assists from sophomore forward Fontaine Marcoux (Washington,
D.C./Potomac) and sophomore defender Meghan Hayde (Massapequa, N.Y./St.
Anthony). The Royals took a 2-1 lead at halftime as Julie Kauffman scored
in the 36th minute.
Senior midfielder Drew Powers (Atlanta, Ga./The Lovett School) tied the
game in the 48th minute as she scored her first goal of the season off
an assist from Marcoux. Senior midfielder Kate Bidwell (Pensacola, Fla./Escambia)
scored the game-winner six minutes into the second half off an assist
from Marcoux. It was the thrid goal of the season for Bidwell. The three
assists for Marcoux tied a school-record for assists in a game. She also
accomplished the feat against Ferrum last season.
Freshman goalkeeper Emily Barker (Clifton, Va./Mount Vernon) made two
saves to earn her second consecutive win.
The Generals return to action Tuesday when they host Bridgewater at 4:00
pm.

ASHLAND, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team won its first
game of the 2001 season as it defeated host Randolph-Macon, 3-1, on Thursday
afternoon.
The Generals got on the board quickly as freshman midfielder Martha Allgood
(Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) scored her first collegiate goal off an assist
from sophomore forward Fontaine Marcoux (Washington, D.C./Potomac) with
2:38 gone by in the first half. Marcoux, W&L's leading scorer last
season, tallied her first goal of the 2001 campaign 10:09 into the game
as she put home a shot off an assist from sophomore defender Meghan Hayde
(Massapequa Park, N.Y./St. Anthony) and the Generals took a 2-0 lead at
halftime.
Senior midfielder Kate Bidwell (Pensacola, Fla./Escambia) put the game
out of reach by scoring her second goal of the season off a free-kick
with 84:15 gone by. Randolph-Macon avoided the shutout as Allison Picarde
scored with 1:56 to play.
Freshman goalkeeper Emily Barker (Clifton, Va./Portsmouth Abbey) earned
her first collegiate victory by making five saves for W&L.
The Generals return to action on Saturday as they travel to Eastern Mennonite
for a game at 2:00 pm.

LYNCHBURG DEFEATS W&L, 4-1, IN WOMEN'S SOCCER (9/7)
LEXINGTON,
Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team dropped its opening
game of the 2001 season, 4-1, to Lynchburg on Friday afternoon on the
Liberty Hall Fields.
In a rematch of last year's ODAC Championship game, Lynchburg got on the
board first at the 19:10 mark when junior forward Nicole Wisniewski's
(Berlin, N.J./Bishop Eustace) left-footed shot found the back of the net
for the only goal of the first-half.
The Hornets (2-0-1, 1-0 ODAC) put the game away in the middle of the second-half
as senior forward Suzanne Weller (Richmond, Va./Cazenovia (N.Y.)) scored
in the 59th minute and junior midfielder Heather Voss (Richmond, Va./Monacan)
scored less than three minutes later. Sophomore midfielder Kat Stuart
(Richmond, Va./Home School) scored Lynchburg's fourth goal in the 87th
minute.
Senior midfielder Kate Bidwell (Pensacola, Fla./Escambia) scored W&L's
(0-1, 0-1 ODAC) first goal of the season with under two minutes to play
off an assist from sophomore forward Fontaine Marcoux (Washington, D.C./Potomac).
The Generals will be back in action on Tuesday, as they travel to Randolph-Macon
for a 4:00 pm match.
