W&L WOMEN’S SOCCER KNOCKED OUT OF NCAA TOURNAMENT BY VA WESLEYAN (11/19)

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The 24th-ranked Washington and Lee women’s soccer team saw its season come to a close in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Sunday evening. The Generals played 19th-ranked Virginia Wesleyan to a scoreless draw in the quarterfinal match, but the Marlins advanced to the Final Four on penalty kicks, 4-3.

Both teams had several solid scoring opportunities throughout the contest, but could not find the net. W&L’s best scoring chance came late in the second half when sophomore forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) one-timed a shot from 10 yards out that sailed over the goal.

Virginia Wesleyan (18-3-3) also produced a flurry during the second half where it took four-consecutive corner kicks, but sophomore goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) turned back three shots on spectacular saves to keep the game scoreless.

In the penalty kick session, VWC goalkeeper Lindsey Williams turned back two shots, including the final W&L shot, allowing the Marlins to advance on the final kick which was sent to the back of the net by Ally Hodgkins.

Virginia Wesleyan held a 10-9 edge in shots and a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. Moreo turned back five shots for the Generals, while Williams notched five saves for Virginia Wesleyan.

Washington and Lee ends its season with a 19-1-3 overall record, setting a new school record for victories and allowing a program-low three goals all season.

W&L WOMEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS WASHINGTON U IN NCAA'S, 2-1 (11/18)

NORFOLK, Va. -- The 24th-ranked Washington and Lee women’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time in program history with a 2-1 victory over sixth-ranked Washington University on Saturday evening at Virginia Wesleyan College.

With the win, the Generals (19-1-2) advance to the sectional final where they will face host Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday at 6:00 pm.

W&L took a 1-0 lead in the 31st minute when junior forward Martha Caulkins (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) drove down the far sideline and fired a shot into the box that Washington junior goalkeeper Carrie Sear knocked down. However, sophomore forward Erica Giordano (Cranford, N.J./Mount Saint Mary Academy) was able to knock in the rebound for her fifth goal of the season.

The goal scored against the Bears (17-3) was the first in eight games, and snapped a scoreless streak of 663:52 minutes. It also marked just the second goal of the season Washington U. has allowed in the first half.

W&L moved ahead 2-0 just seven minutes into the second half. Senior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) slipped through the Bears’ defense along the sideline and sent a pass to Caulkins, who one-timed it into the back of the net for her 11th tally of the season.

Washington U. sophomore Caitlin Malone trimmed the lead to 2-1 at the 68:45 mark when she took a pass from O’Keefe and buried it in the far corner of the goal for just the third goal allowed by W&L all season.

Washington held a 12-7 advantage in shots and both teams were awarded two corner kicks. Sophomore Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) posted four saves in goal for the Generals, while Sear made three stops for the Bears.

W&L DEFEATS MARYVILLE 1-0 TO ADVANCE TO SWEET 16 (11/12)

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The 24th-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team set a program record for wins in a season (18-1-2 overall) and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history with a 1-0 victory over Maryville College on Sunday evening.

After the teams played a scoreless first 45 minutes, W&L found the net just 43 seconds into the second half when junior forward Martha Caulkins (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) scored off an assist from senior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate).

The single tally would be all the scoring W&L would need as the defense surrendered just one shot en route to the Generals' 19th shutout of the season. Sophomore Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) played all 90 minutes in goal and did not face a shot.

Junior goalkeeper Lindsay York played all 90 minutes for the Fighting Scots (16-5), making 14 saves.

Washington and Lee will face Washington University of St. Louis (17-2) in the sectionals on either Friday or Saturday at a site to be determined.

W&L DOWNS MEREDITH IN NCAA FIRST ROUND, 6-0 (11/11)

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Sophomore forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) recorded a hat trick in leading the 24th-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 6-0 victory over Meredith College in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Maryville College.

With her three goals, Van Devender broke the W&L season record for points (57) and tied the W&L record for goals in a season (23).

Van Devender started the scoring in the 28th minute when she scored unassisted. The score remained 1-0 until the second half, when Van Devender scored two goals in a four-minute span for a 3-0 advantage.

W&L upped its lead to 4-0 on a goal by senior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) off an assist from senior forward Sarah Helms (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) at the 68:57 mark and extended to a 5-0 lead on a goal by junior forward Shana Oltmans (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) off a feed from sophomore midfielder Kate Corr (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank Regional) at the 74:26 mark.

Sophomore defender Marissa Van Brunt (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) capped the scoring in the final minutes as she buried a free kick from nearly 30 yards out.

Sophomore Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) and senior Emily Binns (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) both played in goal for the Generals, combining to produce W&L's 18th shutout of the season.

With the win, W&L tied the program record for victories set during the 2002 season. The Generals are now 17-1-2 overall and will face Maryville College in a second round match on Sunday at 6:00 pm.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior midfielder Laura Jackson (Elkton, Md./North East) scored the lone goal of the game as 24th-ranked Virginia Wesleyan upset the 15th-ranked Washington and Lee women soccer team in the semifinals of the 2006 ODAC Tournament, 1-0, on Wednesday afternoon in Lexington, Va.

Jackson's tally came early in the first half when she found the back of the net off a cross from freshman forward Jerilyn Idler (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge) in the 11th minute. The Marlins held on for the duration of regulation to give the Generals their first loss of the season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) made one save for W&L as she allowed just her second goal of the season, while junior Lindsey Williams (Princeton, N.J./W. Windsor-Plainsboro South) stopped five shots between the pipes for VWC.

With the win, the Marlins (15-3-2) advance to the 2006 ODAC Championship match and will take on Guilford on Saturday at 1:30 pm in Greensboro, N.C. The Generals fall to 16-1-2 overall and will find out on Sunday evening if they received an at-large bid to the 2006 NCAA Tournament.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) registered two goals as the 16th-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team stretched its unbeaten streak to 18 with a 2-0 win over Emory & Henry in the quarterfinals of the 2006 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

With her two scores, Van Devender tied the W&L record for points in a season (Karin Treese, 1997) with 51 points off 20 goals and 11 assists. She scored a goal in each half, first finding the back of the net off a feed from junior forward Martha Caulkins (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) in the fifth minute. Van Devender then notched her second tally unassisted at 55:50 for the 2-0 final.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) played the duration for W&L in goal, picking up her 14th shutout. Junior Meredith Ledford (Chattanooga, Tenn./Chattanooga Christian) and freshman Megan Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley) split time in goal for the Wasps (9-10), combining to make 10 saves.

Sophomore forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) gave the Generals an early 1-0 lead when she notched an unassisted tally in the 12th minute. W&L upped its lead in the second half as senior forward Sarah Helms (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) scored off a feed from Van Devender at 77:53.

The Generals, who maintained an unbeaten 9-0-2 record in conference play, improved to 15-0-2 overall on the season. The Royals fell to 12-4 overall and 9-2 in the ODAC.

The Maroons opened the scoring in the 25th minute as freshman forward Margaret Houston (Augusta, Ga./Westminster) found the back of the net. Despite allowing their first goal of 2006, the Generals found an equalizer when sophomore forward Erica Giordano (Cranford, N.J./Mount Saint Mary Academy) notched an unassisted tally at 33:51 to send the game to the half knotted at 1-1.

The game remained tied in the second half until senior forward Sarah Helms (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) scored the game-winner in the 76th minute.

W&L outshot Roanoke, 23-3, and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) made one save for the Blue and White, while junior Erin Hanson (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) stopped eight would-be goals for the Maroons (10-5-1, 6-4).

The Generals broke a scoreless tie at the 33:43 mark when freshman midfielder Roz Klann (Denver, Colo./George Washington) found the back of the net off an assist from sophomore defender Marissa Van Brunt (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville).

W&L's defense, which has yet to allow a goal this season, held the rest of the way as the Generals improved to 13-0-2 overall and 7-0-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Sophomore goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) manned the net for all 90 minutes, making five saves.

Senior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) scored first for the Generals off an assist from freshman defender Maggie Sutherland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) at 4:50 to take a 1-0 lead into the half.

Van Devender opened the scoring in the second half with two goals, before junior midfielder Mary Clair Turner (Lexington, Ky./Sayre School) found the back of the net off an assist from Van Devender in the 65th minute to produce the 4-0 final.

The Generals opened the scoring just 49 seconds into the contest when senior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) found the back of the net off an assist from sophomore defender Marisa Van Brunt (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville). Senior forward Sarah Helms (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) registered a goal off an assist from Wiltshire at 30:08 to give W&L a 2-0 lead at halftime.

The Blue and White scored four unanswered goals in the second half, including two by Giordano, to come away with their 12-straight shutout. W&L was led by Giordano's two goals, while Wiltshire added one goal and one assist.

Senior Emily Binns (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) played the duration of the contest in the goal for W&L, but did not face any shots. Kristen Johnson made 11 saves for Sweet Briar (2-10, 0-8).

Junior forward Martha Caulkins (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) extended the lead to 2-0 when she scored off another feed from Van Devender in the 30th minute and senior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) capped the scoring with an unassisted tally at the 33:13 mark.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Guilford senior goalkeeper Veronica Zych (Champaign, Ill./University Lab School) posted 16 saves, including several from point-blank range in overtime, as the Quakers tied Washington and Lee, 0-0, in double overtime at Watt Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The 18th-ranked Generals outshot Guilford, 30-5, and held a 15-4 advantage on corner kicks, but could not slip the ball past Zych.

Sophomore Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) notched three saves between the posts as the W&L defense kept its opponent from scoring for the 10th-straight contest.

With the tie, the Generals move to 8-0-2 overall and 5-0-2 in the ODAC, while Guilford's record now stands at 7-4-1, 5-1-1 in the ODAC.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Sunday as it hosts Catholic for a 1:00 pm contest.

The Generals racked up all of their scoring in the first half, beginning with an unassisted tally by Van Devender at 15:56. Senior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) upped W&L's lead to 2-0 with a goal off an assist from junior forward Martha Caulkins (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) in the 21st minute. LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) scored two goals as the 21st-ranked Washington and Lee women's soccer team stretched its unbeaten streak to eight games with a 7-0 ODAC victory over Emory & Henry at Watt Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Generals got on the board at 27:26 when freshman midfielder Roz Klann (Denver, Colo./George Washington) tapped in a goal off a corner kick from sophomore forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall). Wiltshire notched her first score of the contest less than 10 minutes later when she found the back of the net off an assist from junior defender Haley Bunting (Houston, Texas/St. John's) at 37:17 to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

W&L broke the game open in the second half as it rallied for five unanswered goals. Senior Jamie Dorsey (Cockeysville, Md.), sophomore midfielder Kate Corr (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank Regional), junior forward Shana Oltmans (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley), Van Devender and Wiltshire all tallied goals as the Generals downed the Wasps for the 11th-straight time.

WILTSHIRE'S HAT TRICK PROPELS GENERALS' SOCCER TO 6-0 WIN OVER BRIDGEWATER

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Senior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) tallied three goals as the Washington and Lee women's soccer team upped its unbeaten streak to seven games with a 6-0 victory over Bridgewater on Tuesday afternoon.

W&L jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first half off goals by sophomore forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) and Wiltshire at 12:39 and 23:23, respectively. The Generals rallied for four more scores, including two from Wiltshire and one from Van Devender, to take a 6-0 lead into the break.

The Generals, who have not allowed a goal all season, held Bridgewater (1-9, 1-4 ODAC) to just one shot in the second half to come away with the 6-0 win.

Wiltshire led W&L with her hat trick, while Van Devender added two goals. With her 18 points (7g, 4a) in 2006, Wiltshire now ranks second all-time in career points (122) at W&L, surpassing Fontaine Marcoux '04.

Sophomore Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) and senior Emily Binns (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) split time between the pipes for the Blue and White, combining for one save. Meghan Jarrell and Brooke Barham played in the goal for the Eagles, stopping nine would-be Generals' goals.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's soccer team maintained its unbeaten season with a 0-0 double-overtime tie with Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday evening at the Trinder Center.

The Generals, who have not allowed a goal all season, battled the Marlins for 120 minutes but neither team could find the back of the net.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) made seven saves in the contest for W&L and picked up her fourth shutout of the season. Lindsey Williams minded the goal for VWC, notching two saves.

Virginia Wesleyan (4-3-1, 1-1-1 ODAC) held the advantage in shots, 14-8, and corner kicks, 7-1.

Glass) each tallied three goals and one assist as the Washington and Lee women's soccer team continued its unbeaten ways with an 12-0 blanking of Hollins on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.

Senior forward Cara Burton (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak) opened the scoring for W&L in just the seventh minute off an assist from junior defender Diana Dozier (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin). Sophomore forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) followed with two scores less than two minutes later to continue the Generals' offensive onslaught. Both Wiltshire and Caulkins would each score twice in the first stanza before junior forward Shana Oltmans (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley) sent W&L to halftime up 8-0 with her goal at 38:31.

Washington and Lee continued its attack in the second period when senior forward Sarah Helms (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) scored two goals early in the second half at 52:17 and 54:04, respectively. Caulkins and Wiltshire both found the back of the net again in the second half to give the Generals their fifth straight win.

The Blue and White were led by Caulkins and Wiltshire, who each had seven points (3g, 1a). Van Devender finished the game with two goals and two assists, while Helms registered two goals and one assist.

Junior forward Martha Caulkins (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) began the scoring for the Generals, notching her fourth goal of the season in the fourth minute of action off an assist from senior forward Anne Wiltshire (Richmond, Va./Collegiate). Van Devender scored both of her goals in the first half and Oltmans would score once in the opening 45 minutes to put W&L up 4-0 going into the break.

The second half opened with an own goal by the Yellow Jackets when Van Devender crossed the ball to Wiltshire and it was misplayed by a R-MC defender at 54:20. Both Wiltshire and Oltmans would score a goal apiece in the final 30 minutes of the match to send the Generals to the 7-0 win.

Oltmans and Van Devender led the Blue and White with their two-goal contribution each, while Wiltshire added one goal and two assists in the win.

The Generals, who are undefeated through three games, opened the scoring in the second minute when sophomore midfielder Kate Corr (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank Regional) found the back of the net off an assist from Caulkins. W&L then scored four more times to take a 5-0 lead into the half.

Senior midfielder Cara Burton (Spring, Texas/Klein Oak) opened the scoring in the second half at 46:10 with assists from sophomore forward Erica Giordano (Cranford, N.J./Mount Saint Mary Academy) and junior midfielder Mary Clair Turner (Lexington, Ky./Sayre School). LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) had a hand in three of the Generals' four goals, notching two goals and an assist, to lift the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Southwestern at the W&L Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Watt Field.

Van Devender, who was named the MVP of the invitational, opened the scoring in the 25th minute with an unassisted tally. Freshman defender Maggie Sutherland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) followed up with a goal just under five minutes later with her first collegiate goal off an assist from Van Devender to put the Generals up 2-0 at the half.

The Generals (2-0) struck again in the second half when Van Devender notched her second unassisted goal of the contest at the 86:25 mark. W&L registered its' final tally of the match with just 21 seconds remaining as junior midfielder Mary Clair Turner (Lexington, Ky./Sayre School) found the back of the net off an assist from junior defender Haley Bunting (Houston, Texas/St. John's).

The Generals struck twice in the first half to come away with the shutout win. Sophomore midfielder Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) scored unassisted in just the third minute of the game. Senior midfielder Jamie Dorsey (Cockeysville, Md./McDonogh) followed with a goal in the 25th minute, scoring off an assist from Van Devender to help seal the victory for the Generals.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) picked up her first shutout of the season, making one save in the win for Washington and Lee (1-0). Rosie Davis made three saves for Kenyon (1-2).

In the second game of the Washington and Lee Invitational, Southwestern scored two goals in the second half en route to a 2-0 win over Randolph-Macon. Nicole Morilak and Laura Kromann notched one goal each in the Pirates' win.
