ERIC RITTER CONCLUDES COMPETITION AT NCAAS

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Junior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) wrapped up his season by finishing 22nd in the 200-yard backstroke on Saturday at the NCAA Division III Swim Championships at Emory University.

Ritter’s time of 1:55.67 in the 200-back placed him 22nd of 29 swimmers.

With today’s competition, Ritter has concluded his participation in the 2003 NCAAs.

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Junior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) earned All-America honors for the second consecutive season in the 100-yard backstroke on Friday evening at the NCAA Division III Swim Championships at Emory University.

Ritter, seeded 14th in the 100-back after morning preliminaries, touched in 52.06 to finish 16th. His performance earned him Honorable Mention All-America honors.

Ritter wraps up competition tomorrow by competing in the 200-yard backstroke.

ERIC RITTER IN ACTION AT FIRST DAY OF NATIONALS

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Junior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) represented the Washington and Lee men’s swimming team in the first day of competition in the NCAA Division III Swim Championships at Emory University on Thursday.

Ritter finished 48th in the 50-yard freestyle, the first of three events in which he will compete, with a time of 22.14.

Ritter resumes competition tomorrow by swimming the 100-yard backstroke, while on Saturday he is in action in the 200-yard back.

W&L WOMEN’S SWIMMING ODAC CHAMPS

RADFORD, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women’s swimming team captured its 10th consecutive ODAC Championship on Sunday at Radford University.

The Generals (9-4, 3-1 ODAC) avenged their lone conference loss to Randolph-Macon with a composite score of 619 points. They were trailed by Randolph-Macon (441), Randolph-Macon Woman’s (288), Hollins (248) and Sweet Briar (226).

Leading the way in the third and final day of competition was senior Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross), who became the second W&L swimmer to win an individual title, by winning the 200-yard butterfly in 2:15.22.

Freshman Kristine Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) paced a group of swimmers who earned second- and third-place finishes with a second-place time of 54.82 in the 100 Free. Seniors Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich/Niles) and Michelle Moore (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy), along with junior Mandi Kimble (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) and freshman Beth Sauer (Reistertown, Md./McDonogh) all placed third in various events. Austin swam the 100 Free in 55.67, Moore finished the 1650 Free in 19:28.22, Kimble touched in 2:18.52 in the 200 Back and Sauer finished the 200 Breast in 2:39.00.

W&L WOMEN’S SWIMMING MAINTAINS TOP SPOT

RADFORD, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women’s swimming team increased its lead in the second day of the Atlantic States/ODAC Championships swimming meet on Saturday at Radford University. The Generals, who held a 14-point advantage after day one, now lead second-place Randolph-Macon 498-368.

Freshman Beth Sauer (Reistertown, Md./McDonogh) brought home the first first-place finish of the meet for W&L, winning the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:13.63.

The Generals also picked up two second-place finishes courtesy of seniors Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich/Niles) and Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross). Austin swam a lifetime-best time of 1:59.49 in the 200 Free, while Huffman touched in 4:45.11 in the 400 IM.

The Generals 800-meter freestyle relay team of Austin, Huffman, junior Mandi Kimble (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) and freshman Kristine Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) finished second with a school-record time of 8:07.55. In the 200 Medley relay, W&L touched third in 1:59.03.

The Generals will be swimming for their 10th straight ODAC title tomorrow morning in the third and final day of competition.

W&L WOMEN’S SWIMMING IN FIRST AFTER DAY ONE

RADFORD, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women’s swimming team amassed 198 points on Friday to take a 14-point lead in the first of the three-day Atlantic States/ODAC Championships swimming meet at Radford University.

The Generals, who are seeking to capture their 10th straight ODAC title, are 14 points ahead of second-place Randolph-Macon, the lone ODAC school to defeat them this season.

Leading the way for W&L were seniors Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich/Niles) and Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross), who each made solid contributions individually and as members of relay teams. Austin placed third in the 500 Free, touching in 5:34.16. She was also a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Eleanor Williams (Metairie, La./Isidore Newman), senior Katie Kolle (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) and freshman Kristine Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) which finished third (1:44.27), and the second-place 400-yard medley relay team (4:14.11). She was joined on the latter by Huffman, freshman Beth Sauer (Reistertown, Md./McDonogh) and junior Mandi Kimble (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School).

In addition to her relay efforts, Huffman earned second place in the 200 IM, touching in 2:15.59.

The second day of competition gets underway tomorrow morning.

W&L MEN’S SWIMMING FINISHES SECOND AT SOUTHERN STATES

RADFORD, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s swimming team wrapped up competition at the three-day Southern States Championships on Saturday with 585.5 points to earn a second-place finish.

Competing against Division I teams, the Generals finished second of five teams, finishing only behind the College of Charleston.

Pacing W&L were junior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), sophomore Chris Colby (Ossining, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and freshman Clark Barrineau (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg), each of whom won one event. Ritter’s time of 1:53.63 was good for first in the 200 Back, while Colby won the 200 Fly and Barrineau touched first in the 1650 Free.

Also accumulating points were junior Drew Catanese (Southampton, Mass./Suffield Academy), who placed third in the 200 Fly, and the 400 Free relay team of Ritter, seniors Zach Fake (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) and Patrick Frankfort (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) and freshman Reed Evans (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day), which finished second.

Barrineau, Colby, Fake, Frankfort, Ritter and junior Jonathan James (Covington, La./Covington) all received All-Southern States honors for their performances.

The W&L men wrap up their season with a 5-6 record overall, and will await word as to which individuals have qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships which take place Thu., Mar. 20 through Sat., Mar. 22.

W&L MEN’S SWIMMING IN ACTION AT DAY TWO OF SOUTHERN STATES

RADFORD, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s swimming team completed its second of three days of competition in the Southern States Championships on Friday at Radford University.

Junior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) followed up a strong first day by claiming the Generals’ first first-place finish of the meet in the 100-yard backstroke, touching in 51.42. He was also a member of the 200 Medley relay team which placed second, finishing in 1:37.13. Joining Ritter on that squad were senior Zach Fake (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands), and juniors Drew Catanese (Southampton, Mass./Suffield Academy) and Jonathan James (Covington, La./Covington).

The other top individual performances were turned in by senior Patrick Frankfort (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass), Catanese and James, each of whom swam third-place times. Frankfort finished the 400 IM in 4:27.73, Catanese swam the 100 Fly in 53.44 and James touched in 1:46.12 in the 200 Free.

W&L finished third in its other relay entry, the 800-yard freestyle, by finishing in 7:24.79. The team was comprised of Frankfort, James and freshmen Clark Barrineau (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) and Andrew Lloyd (Darien, Conn./Darien).

W&L will wrap up its participation in the Southern States Championships tomorrow, with events getting underway at 10:30 am.

W&L MEN’S SWIMMING COMPETING AT SOUTHERN STATES CHAMPIONSHIPS

RADFORD, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s swimming team was in action today in the first day of competition at the three-day Southern States Championships at Radford University.

Senior Patrick Frankfort (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) and junior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) were the top individual performers for the Generals. Frankfort turned in a third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:53.47), while Ritter touched third in the 50-yard freestyle (21.86).

Ritter was also a member of the 200 Free and 400 Medley relay teams which both placed second. Ritter teamed with senior Zach Fake (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands), junior Jonathan James (Covington, La./Covington) and freshman Reed Evans (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day) to finish the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:26.90, finishing .20 off the winning time turned in by the College of Charleston.

Ritter, Fake, James and junior Drew Catanese (Southampton, Mass./Suffield Academy) then combined to finish the 400-yard medley relay in 3:38.45, again finishing only behind a team of College of Charleston swimmers.

The second day of competition gets underway Friday morning at 8:30 am.

W&L SWIMMING SWEEPS MARYMOUNT

ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s swimming teams both picked up wins over Marymount on Saturday evening in Arlington, Va.

The W&L men (5-6) took a 105-67 decision, while the Generals’ women (9-4) were 125.5-59.5 victors.

A balanced attack paced the W&L men to victory as seven swimmers won events. Seniors Zach Fake (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) and Patrick Frankfort (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass), junior Jonathan James (Covington, La./Covington) and freshman Clark Barrineau (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) each won as W&L swept the freestyle events. Fake won the 50 Free in 22.80, Frankfort touched first in the 200 Free (1:53.22), James was victorious in the 100 Free (50.55) and Barrineau’s time of 5:12.83 was tops in the 500 Free.

Other winners were junior Drew Catanese (Southampton, Mass./Suffield Academy) in the 100 Fly (54.32), junior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), who won the 100 Back (1:01.39), and sophomore Chris Colby (Ossining, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac), who touched first in the 200 IM (2:10.04).

Senior Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) won three races to lead the W&L women. She finished first in the 200 IM, 100 Fly and 500 Free with times of 2:20.73, 1:03.61 and 5:35.90, respectively.

Senior Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich/Niles) and freshman Kristine Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) each won two events. Austin’s times of 26.24 and 56.64 were good for first in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle, while Holda placed first in the 200 Free (2:03.70) and 100 Back (1:06.38).

The W&L men will return to action on Thurs., Feb. 13, when they compete in the Southern States Championships at Radford University. The Generals’ women’s squad hits the pool again on Fri., Feb. 21, when it competes for the ODAC Championship.

W&L SWIMMING TEAMS DROPPED BY JOHNS HOPKINS

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s swimming teams fell at Johns Hopkins on Saturday in Baltimore, Md.

The Bluejays’ men’s team (6-6) defeated W&L, 105-77, while the women (5-7) were 99-78 winners.

Sophomore Michael Lee (Hanford, Calif./Hanford) and freshman Clark Barrineau (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) paced the Generals’ men (4-6) with wins in the 200 Breast (2:39.78) and 500 Free (5:10.63).

The W&L women (8-4) were led by junior Mandi Kimble (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) and sophomore Tasia Fisher (Stoney Creek, Conn./Sacred Heart Academy), who each won one event. Kimble touched first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:22.59), while Fisher won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:41.88.

Both the men's and women's teams will be back in the water later this afternoon (5:00 pm) when they take on Marymount.

RADFORD, Va. -- The 200-yard freestyle relay team comprised of sophomore Suzie LaFleur (Natick, Mass./Montrose), senior Katie Kolle (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands), sophomore Eleanor Williams (Metairie, La./Isidore Newman) and senior Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich/Niles) finished in 1:45.97 to lift the Washington and Lee women’s swimming team to a 122-115 victory over Radford on Sunday afternoon in Radford, Va.

Senior Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) and freshman Kristine Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) each won two events to lead the Generals (8-3). Huffman won the 200 Fly (2:15.89) and 500 Free (5:39.67), while Holda touched first in the 50 Free (26.41) and 100 Free (56.82).

Other W&L winners were Austin in the 200 Free (2:03.61) and junior Mandi Kimble (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) in the 200 Back (2:20.93).

Division I Radford (1-6) was led by two-event winner Julie Brooks, who picked up wins in the 200 IM (2:16.68) and 200 Breast (2:36.80).

The Generals’ men’s and women’s squads will be in action again next Saturday when they travel to Johns Hopkins for a 10:00 am meet.

W&L SWIMMING TEAMS FALL TO GETTYSBURG

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s swimming teams were both defeated by squads from Gettysburg on Saturday afternoon at the Cy Twombly Pool.

The Generals’ women’s squad fell to 7-3 overall this year after dropping a 162.5-79.5 decision, while the men’s team fell to 4-5 overall with its 134-106 loss.

The Gettysburg women (5-0) won 11 of the 13 events, including both the 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard free relay, to cruise to the victory. Senior Heather Gallagher (Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) was the lone two-event winner for the Bullets, touching first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.51) and 100-yard butterfly (1:00.92).

The W&L women were led by senior Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross), who won the 200 Breast in 2:35.85 and freshman Kristine Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville), who won the 100 Free, touching in 55.73.

The GC men (3-1) were paced by senior Tom Leupold (Richwood, N.J./Clearview Regional) who won the 100 Breast (1:03.78) and the 100 Free (50.23). Five other members of the Bullets’ men’s squad also won individual events.

Junior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) was the top swimmer for W&L, picking up wins in the 100-yard backstroke (53.80) and 200-yard backstroke (2:03.45). Senior Zach Fake (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) chipped in with a win in the 50 Free (22.49), while junior Drew Catanese (Southhampton, Mass./Suffield) won the 100 Fly (55.84).

The Generals’ women’s team is back in the pool again tomorrow as they travel to Radford for a 12:00 pm meet. The men will return to action in a dual meet next Saturday morning (10:00 am) at Johns Hopkins.

W&L SWIMMING HOSTS SEWANEE

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s swimming teams were in action on Sunday afternoon when they hosted Sewanee at the Cy Twombly Pool.

The Generals’ women’s squad (7-2) eked out a 126.5-114.5 victory over the Tigers, their first win in the past eight meetings with Sewanee, while the W&L men fell, 136-101.

Senior Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) keyed the win for the W&L women by winning the 200 Fly (2:14.98), 100 Fly (1:03.57) and 200 IM (2:18.06). Each of her times were season-bests. Freshman Beth Sauer (Reistertown, Md./McDonogh) picked up wins in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard breaststroke with times of 1:14.17 and 2:38.11, respectively. Freshman Kristine Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) was the other two-time winner for W&L, touching first in the 50 Free (26.19) and 100 Free (55.74).

Senior Zach Fake (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands), junior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) and freshman Clark Barrineau (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) each won one event for the Generals’ men’s team (4-4). Fake’s time of 22.45 in the 50 Free was good for first, while Ritter won the 100 Back (54.72) and Barrineau won the 500 Free (5:05.85).

Sewanee’s women (1-3) were led by a three-event winner, freshman Elizabeth Land (Memphis, Tenn./Hutchinson). Land was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.04), 200-yard backstroke (2:16.07) and 500-yard freestyle (5:29.67).

Three members of Tigers’ men’s squad (2-2) won two events. Junior Will Oakes (Belden, Miss./Tupelo) and sophomores Mike Martelli (Winchester, Ky./Henry Clay) and Marc Ricker (Paris, Ky./Lexington Catholic) paced Sewanee with their wins. Oakes touched first in the 200 Free (1:48.46) and 100 Free (48.69), Martelli won the 200 (2:00.21) and 100 Fly (53.53) and Ricker won the 100 (1:04.45) and 200 Breast (2:18.08).

W&L’s men’s and women’s teams will hit the pool again next Saturday when they host Gettysburg for a 2:00 pm meet.

W&L SWIMMING KNOCKS OFF CATHOLIC

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s swimming teams were both victorious against Catholic University squads on Saturday afternoon at the Cy Twombly Pool. The men were 145-50 winners, while the women prevailed by a 135-70 count.

Three different members of the Generals’ men’s squad (4-3) won two events. Freshman Clark Barrineau (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) picked up wins in the 1000 Free (10:48.22) and 500 Free (5:12.90), senior Zach Fake (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) won the 50-yard freestyle (22.25) and the 100-yard freestyle (50.17) and junior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) won the 200 IM and 200 Back with times of 2:10.19 and 2:09.63, respectively.

The W&L women were led by three-event winner, senior Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) and two-time winner, freshman Kristine Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville). Huffman won the 1000 Free (11:31.26), 200 IM (2:19.10) and 200 Fly (2:18.00), while Holda touched first in the 50-yard freestyle (25.92) and 100-yard freestyle (55.74).

Sophomore Jim Horstmann (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) was the top performer for the CUA men (4-2), winning the 200 Breast with a time of 2:21.93 and finishing third in the 50 Free, touching in 23.09.

The Cardinals’ women’s team was paced by senior Kelly Anne Creazzo (Wilmington, Del./Ursulline Academy), who finished first in the 500 Free (5:35.22) and second in the 200 IM (2:22.75) and 200 Fly (2:21.12).

W&L’s men’s and women’s teams will both return to action next Saturday when they host Sewanee. The meet is scheduled to start at 11:00 am.

W&L MEN’S SWIMMING TAKES MEET, 110-91, VERSUS VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s swimming team evened its record at 3-3 overall with a 110-91 win over VMI on Wednesday evening at the Cy Twombly Pool.

The Generals were paced by seniors Zach Fake (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) and Patrick Frankfort (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass), along with junior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) and sophomore Chris Colby (Ossining, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac), who each won two events. Fake won the 50 Free (22.65) and 100 Free (50.59), while Frankfort placed first in the 200 Free (1:52.77) and 500 Free (5:13.22). Ritter and Colby tied for first in the 200 IM, both finishing in 2:08.95. Ritter also won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:16.08, while Colby touched first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:09.57).

Junior Ryan Beatley (Grafton, Va./Grafton) led the Keydets with a first place effort in the 200 Breast (2:28.49). Senior Chris Lambert (Christiansburg, Va./Christiansburg) and freshmen Chris Eaton (River Forest, Ill./River Forest) and Bart Payne (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) each turned in second place performances in the 200 Back (2:17.49), 50 Free (23.87) and 1000 Free (11:10.69), respectively.

W&L now breaks for the remainder of December for exams and the holiday season. The Generals will be back in the pool on Sat., Jan. 11 when they host Catholic for a 2:00 pm meet.

W&L SWIMMING COMPETES AGAINST THE COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY

EWING, N.J. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s swimming teams were in action on Sunday swimming against the College of New Jersey in Ewing, N.J. The W&L men fell, 108-81, while the women fell, too, 116-88.

The Generals’ men’s squad (2-3) was led by freshman Clark Barrineau (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg), who won the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:40.64. Sophomore Chris Colby’s (Ossining, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) time of 2:03.65 in the 200 Fly was good for second.

The pace-setters for the W&L women (5-2) were senior Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich/Niles) and freshman Kristine Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville), who each won two events. Austin won the 500 Free (5:35.06) and 200 Free (2:03.57), while Holda picked up wins in the 50 Free (25.99) and 100 Free (56.35). Freshman Elizabeth Sauer (Reistertown, Md./McDonogh) contributed a win in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing in 2:41.00.

The Generals’ men’s squad will be back in the pool on Wed., Dec. 4, for a 7:00 pm meet at VMI. The W&L women return to action on Sat., Jan. 11, when they host Catholic for a 2:00 pm meet.

W&L WOMEN’S SWIMMING DEFEATS BRYN MAWR, 119-77

BRYN MAWR, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee women’s swimming team improved to 5-1 on the season with a 119-77 win over Bryn Mawr on Saturday afternoon in Bryn Mawr, Pa.

The Generals were led by senior Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross), who won the 200 IM (2:20.61) and 500 free (5:39.31) events.

Sophomore Laura Westerman (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) chipped in with a win in the 100 free with a time of 1:00.43. She was also part of the W&L 200 medley relay team which took first place with a time of 2:05.62. Westerman was joined on the relay team by junior Amanda Kimball (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School), senior Jen Fallon (Boerne, Texas/Boerne) and senior Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich/Niles).

Washington and Lee returns to action on Sunday as both the men’s and women’s teams swim at the College of New Jersey at 11:00 am.

W&L MEN’S SWIMMING DEFEATS SALEM INTERNATIONAL, 125-66

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s swimming team upped its record to 2-2 overall with a 125-66 win over Salem International on Friday evening at the Cy Twombly Pool.

The Generals were paced by junior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), who took first place in two events. Ritter won the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:04.31 and won the 100-yard back with a time of 1:02.20.

Seniors Zach Fake (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) and Patrick Frankfort (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass), junior Drew Cantanese (Southampton, Mass./Suffield Academy) and freshman Clark Barrineau (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg) also posted a win on the evening.

Fake won the 50-yard free (22.43), Frankfort won the 500-yard free (5:08.24), Cantanese won the 100-yard fly (55.14) and Barrineau won the 1650-free (18:16.71).

With the loss, Salem International fell to 1-1 on the season.

W&L WOMEN’S SWIMMING DEFEATS HOLLINS, 176-81

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women’s swimming team improved to 4-1 overall, 3-1 in the ODAC, with a 176-81 victory over Hollins on Wednesday evening at the Cy Twombly Pool.

The Generals were led by senior Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross), who took first in three events. Huffman won the 100-yard back in a time of 1:07.42, the 200-yard back in a time of 2:21.65 and the 200-yard breast in a time of 2:38.22.

Senior Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich./Niles) and junior Jackie Green (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) both won two events. Austin claimed the 200-yard free (2:07.84) and 500-yard free (5:41.29), while Green posted wins in the 100-yard fly (1:09.44) and 200-yard fly (2:33.82).

With the loss, Hollins dropped to 1-3 overall and in the ODAC.

The Generals will be in action again on Sat., Nov. 23, when they travel to Bryn Mawr for a 2:00 pm meet.

W&L MEN'S SWIMMING DROPS MEET TO MARY WASHINGTON

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s swimming team fell, 108-96, to Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va. With the loss, the Generals record now stands at 1-2 for the season.

W&L was led by freshman Clark Barrineau (Charlotte, N.C./South Mecklenburg), who had two first place finishes. Barrineau won the1000 Free with a time of 10:24.13 and the 500 Free by finishing in 5:05.26.

Senior Patrick Frankfort (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) won the 200 Free, touching in 1:51.25. He also finished second in the 100 Free (51.34) and was a member of the 400 Free Relay team which finished first in 3:20.90.

The Generals’ men’s will return to action on Friday when they host Salem International for a 5:00 pm match.

W&L SWIMMING IN ACTION AGAINST RANDOLPH-MACON

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women’s swimming team saw its streak of 48 consecutive wins in ODAC regular season dual meets come to an end Friday night at the Cy Twombly Pool as Randolph-Macon held on for a 132-130 win over the Generals. On the men’s side, W&L defeated the Yellow Jackets, 165-63.

Freshmen Erin Ewalt (Towson, Md./Baltimore Lutheran) and Tiffany Pearsall (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) keyed the R-MC (3-0, 2-0 ODAC) victory by each winning three events. Ewalt touched first in the 100 Back, finishing in 1:01.37, the 200 Back, finishing in 2:11.48 and the 100 Fly, finishing in 1:01.86. Pearsall won the 200 Free (1:57.26), 100 Free (55.07) and 500 Free (5:22.32).

The Generals (3-1, 2-1 ODAC) were led by senior Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross), who finished with firsts in the 1000 Free, 200 Fly and 200 IM with times of 11:49.87, 2:21.01 and 2:20.28, respectively. Freshman Elizabeth Sauer’s (Reistertown, Md./McDonogh) time of 1:16.50 was good for first in the 100 Breast.

Junior Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) paced the W&L men (1-1) with three wins. He finished first in the 100 Back (57.45), 50 Free (22.80) and 100 Free (51.37). Senior Patrick Frankfort (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) contributed two firsts with times of 1:53.92 and 2:16.73 in the 200 Free and 200 Back, respectively.

The Yellow Jackets men’s team (1-2) was led by senior Nick Griffith’s (Chesterfield, Va./L.C. Byrd) wins in the 100 (1:05.91) and 200 Breast (2:25.75).

The Generals’ men’s squad returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Mary Washington for a 2:00 pm meet. The women will be back in the pool on Wednesday hosting ODAC-rival Hollins for a 7:00 pm meet.

W&L SWIMMING COMPETES AGAINST TRANSYLVANIA

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s swimming teams were in action against Transylvania on Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Ky. The W&L women knocked off TU, 108-97, while the men fell, 118-83.

Senior Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) won three events to lead the way for the General women, who upped their mark to 3-0 overall. Huffman brought home firsts in the 1000 Free (11:32.34), the 200 IM (2:19.53) and the 200 Fly (2:17.11).

Freshman Kristine Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) chipped in with wins in the 50 and 100 Free with times of 25.86 and 56.29, respectively. Other W&L winners were senior Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich/Niles), who clocked a 2:03.24 in the 200-yard Freestyle, and sophomore Eleanor Williams (Metairie, La./Isidore Newman), who won the 200 Back in 2:20.73.

The W&L men (0-1) were led by senior Zach Fake (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) and sophomore Chris Colby (Ossining, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac). Fake won the 50 Free with a time of 22.72, while Colby finished first in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:04.39.

The Generals’ men’s and women’s squads return to the pool on Friday when they host Randolph-Macon for a 7:00 pm meet.

W&L WOMEN’S SWIMMING DEFEATS SWEET BRIAR, 168-82

SWEET BRIAR, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women’s swimming team upped its record to 2-0 with a 168-82 defeat of ODAC-rival Sweet Briar on Wednesday evening in Sweet Briar, Va.

Senior Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) won three events to lead the way for W&L (2-0, 2-0 ODAC). Her times of 2:38.13, 1:13.30 and 2:41.45 made her the pace-setter in the 200-meter Butterfly, 100-meter Freestyle and 200-meter Individual Medley, respectively.

Fellow senior Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich/Niles) contributed to the Generals’ cause with wins in the 800 Free (10:30.72) and 100 Free (1:07.25). Junior Mandi Kimble (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) and freshman Kristine Holda (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) also each won two races. Kimble won the 200 Free and 200 Back with times of 2:23.78 and 2:42.69, while Holda’s times of 1:14.38 and 29.02 were good for first place finishes in the 100 Back and 50 Free.

In total, W&L swimmers finished first in 12 events.

The Generals’ men’s and women’s squads will be in action together this Sunday when they travel to Transylvania for a 1:00 pm meet.

W&L WOMEN'S SWIMMING WINS SEASON-OPENER, 79-42, AT RAND.-MACON WOMAN'S

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women’s swimming team opened its season with a 79-42 win over ODAC-rival Randolph-Macon Woman’s College on Thursday evening in Lynchburg, Va.

Seniors Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich/Niles) and Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross), along with freshman Beth Sauer (Reistertown, Md./McDonogh), each won two events to lead the Generals. Austin won the 200 and 500 Free with times of 2:06.27 and 5:53.88, while Huffman finished ahead of the pack in the 200 Fly (2:18.39) and 1000 Free (11:37.80). Sauer registered wins in the 100 and 200 Breast, finishing in 1:18.22 and 2:45.49.

Junior Mandi Kimble’s (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) time of 2:22.68 was good for first place in the 200-yard backstroke.

The Generals (1-0, 1-0 ODAC) will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Sweet Briar for a 7:00 pm meet.
