1996-97 Washington and Lee Women's Swimming Results
W&L 126, Hollins 107
February 11, 1997 -- Roanoke, Va.
W&L tied the school record for wins in a season, by picking up
their eighth win of the year and finishing the dual meet portion of the
schedule with an 8-6 record, by defeating Hollins 126-107 on Tuesday.
With the win, W&L extended its dual meet winning streak against ODAC
opponents to 28 meets and recorded eight wins for the fifth consecutive year.
Leading the way for the Generals was Margaret Hoehl, as she won
the 200-yard back (2:23.35) and the 100-yard fly (1:07.56). Also picking
up wins for W&L were Greta Richter in the 200-yard free (2:11.86), Laura
Marshall in the 100-yard back (1:06.83), Lauren McKeever in the 100-yard
breast (1:14.61), Lezael Haynes in the 200-yard fly (2:25.01) and Bligh
Wollner in the 500-yard free (5:53.18). The Generals will return to the
pool on Feb. 21, as they look to win their fourth straight ODAC/Atlantic
States Championships.
Mary Washington 122, W&L 68
February 1, 1997 -- Lexington, Va.
W&L fell to 7-6 in dual meets this season, as they fell to state
rival Mary Washington 122-68 on Saturday in the Cy Twombly pool. W&L has
one dual meet remaining, against Hollins on Feb. 11, to try and win eight
dual meets for the fifth consecutive season.
The Generals had only one win against Mary Washington, but it was
a big one, as Brooke Stanley remained undefeated in the 50 yard freestyle
this season as she set a new meet record time of 25.28.
Sewanee 105, W&L 100
January 31, 1997 -- Lexington, Va.
W&L lost a heartbreaker to visiting Sewanee 105-100 on Friday
night. W&L led the whole meet, and took a 98-90 advantage into the
400-yard free relay, but Sewanee took first and second in the event and
knocked of the Generals by five.
W&L got three wins from Margaret Hoehl, as she won the 1000-yard
free, the 200-yard free and the 500-yard free. Brooke Stanley also made a
big contribution for the Generals, as she won the 50 and the 100 yard
freestyle's, both in new meet record times.
Johns Hopkins 93, W&L 25; Emory 88, W&L 30
January 25, 1997 -- Chapel Hill, N. C.
The Generals lost twice over the weekend, as they fell to Johns
Hopkins 93-25 and Emory 88-30 in a tri-meet at UNC-Chapel Hill on
Saturday. With the loss, W&L drops to 7-4 on the season, and must win one
of their final two dual meets of the season to reach the eight win mark
for the fifth consecutive year.
W&L got first place finishes from Brooke Stanley in the 50-yard
free (25.10) and Margaret Hoehl in the 500-yard free, as she set a new
ODAC season best time of 5:24.99.
W&L will return to action this weekend as they host Sewanee on
Friday evening at 7:00 PM and then host Mary Washington on Saturday at
2:00 PM.
W&L 150, Radford 74
January 22, 1997 -- Radford, Va.
W&L won its seventh dual meet of the season on Wednesday, as they
defeated Radford 150-74. The win gives the Generals a 7-2 record for the
season, and with one more win, they can reach the eight victory mark for
the fifth straight season.
W&L took first place in all 11 individual events and both relays.
Four Generals won two events each, as Natasha Sedlock won the 200 free
(2:11.10) and the 500 free (5:49.94), Margaret Hoehl won the 100 back
(1:05.50) and the 200 back (2:22.05), Taryn Kiekow won the 200 fly
(2:35.34) and the 100 free (59.87) and Brooke Stanley won the 50 free
(25.39) and the 100 fly (1:03.93).
The Generals will return to the pool on Saturday as they travel
to UNC Chapel Hill to swim against Emory University and Johns Hopkins
University, with action set to begin at 11:00 AM.
Catholic 103, W&L 102
January 18, 1997 -- Lexington, Va.
W&L lost for just the second time this season, as the were nipped
by visiting Catholic University 103-102. This is the second straight year
that these two teams have had a 103-102 score, with W&L winning by the
one point margin last season. With the loss, W&L falls to 6-2 on the
season, while Catholic improves to 6-3. W&L's two losses this season have
been by a combined total of four points.
The Generals got a huge performance from sophomore Margaret
Hoehl, as she won 200 yard freestyle (2:05.28), the 500 yard free
(5:30.47) and the 1000 yard free (11:20.80), including swimming the 1000
and 200 yard frees back to back. Freshman Brooke Stanley also had an
impressive meet, winning the 100 yard free in a new meet record time of
54.96 and the 50 yard free in a time of 24.99, which broke her own school
record, and is good enough to be an NCAA "B" cut qualifying time.
W&L 142, Goucher 50
January 15, 1997 -- Lexington, Va.
The Generals won their second meet of the week and their fifth in
a row by defeating visiting Goucher College 142-50 on Wednesday evening.
W&L was led by Margaret Hoehl and Brooke Stanley who each won two events.
Hoehl won the 500 yard free (5:36.02) and the 1000 yard free (11:30.03),
while Stanley won the 50 yard free (25.90) and the 200 yard free (2:02.33).
W&L 91, Buffalo State 49
January 13, 1997 -- Lexington, Va.
W&L returned to the pool for the first time since before the
holidays and defeated Buffalo State 91-49 in the Cy Twombly Pool on
Monday evening. Natasha Sedlock led the Generals in individual scoring as
she won the 50 yard freestyle in a time of 28.17 and took second in the
100 yard breaststroke in a time of 1:19.70.
W&L 121, Sweet Briar 59
December 4, Sweet Briar, Va.
Washington and Lee's women's swimming team improved their overall record
to 4-1 on the season, 2-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, with a
121-59 victory at Sweet Briar on Wednesday. The win was the 27th straight
ODAC dual meet victory for the Generals. W&L won all 12 events, and got
two first place finishes from senior captain Laura Marshall who won the
100-yard free (1:05.34) and the 200-yard free (2:22.59). The Generals
will return to the water on Jan. 13 as they host Buffalo State at 7:00 PM.
W&L 102, Randolph-Macon Woman's College 39
December 3, 1996 -- Lexington, VA
W&L improved its record to 3-1 this season with an easy 102-39 victory
over Randolph-Macon Woman's College in their first home meet of the
season. The win was W&L's 26th straight in ODAC dual meets. The
Generals were impressive as they won 12 of the 13 races and set seven
new meet records. Freshman Lauren Beckenhauer led the way for W&L as
she won both the 100 and 200-yard backstrokes.
W&L 135, Marymount 53
November 16, 1996 -- Arlington, VA
The Generals improved to 2-1 on the young season with a 135-53 victory
over Marymount. W&L took first place in seven of the eight
individual events and placed 1-2 in both relays. Freshman
Brooke Stanley broke her own school record in the 100 free
with a time of 54.15 seconds, replacing the mark of 54.82
that she had set a week earlier.
Transylvania 104, W&L 101
November 9, 1996 -- Lexington, Kentucky
The Generals fell to 1-1 on the season, as they lost a tight meet to
Transylvania University by the final score of 104-101. For the Generals,
freshman Brooke Stanley won both the 50 and the 100-yard freestyle
events, and set a new school record of 54.82 seconds in the 100. W&L also
got first place finishes from sophomore Margaret Hoehl in the
1000-yard free (11:18.50) and freshman Lauren Beckenhauer in the
200-yard back (2:18.07)
W&L 118, Centre 73
November 9, 1996 -- Danville, Kentucky
W&L's women's swimming team opened their 1996-97 season with a 118-73
victory over Centren College. The Generals took first place in five of
the nine individual events and both relays. Freshman Brooke Stanley had a
tremendous collegiate debut, as she broke the school record in the
50-yard freestyle in a time of 25.09 seconds, and then went on to break
that record when she swam the first leg of the 200-yard free relay in a
time of 25.02, which also broke the Centre College pool record.
