1997-98 Washington and Lee Women's Swimming Results
ODAC/Atlantic States Championship
February 20-22, 1998 -- Radford, Va.
Washington and Lee won six events to capture the team title at the Old
Dominion Athletic Conference/Atlantic States championship in women's
swimming. The three day event wrapped up on Sunday at Radford University.
The Generals scored 616 points to easily outdistance runner-up Mary
Baldwin which had 362 points. The College of Notre Dame(Md.) placed third
of the 15 schools competing with 313 points. W&L has won the event five
straight years.
Leading the Generals was junior Maragret Hoehl who won three individual
events. On Sunday, Hoehl won the 1,650-yard freestyle in a meet record
time of 17:44.48 to post a provisional qualifying time for next month's
NCAA Division III championships. Hoehl also won the 400-yard individual
medley in a meet record time of 4:47.22 and the 500-yard freestyle. W&L's
other three victories came in relay events.
W&L 153, Hollins 83
February 10, 1998 -- Lexington, Va.
The Generals closed the regular season with a 153-83 victory over Hollins
College on Tuesday evening in the Cy Twombly Pool. W&L finishes its dual
meet schedule with a record of 8-6, tying the school record for wins in a
season. Senior Megan Wiedmaier and junior Margaret Hoehl each won two
events and W&L's four seniors - Kendall Cruickshanks, Taryn Kiekow,
Wiedmaier and Bligh Wollner teamed to win the final event, the 200-yard
freestyle relay. W&L's next competition will be at the ODAC/Atlantic
States Championships from February 20-22.
Mary Washington 138, W&L 60
January 31, 1998 -- Fredericksburg, Va.
The Generals swam a competitive meet against Mary Washington, but fell to
the Eagles 138-60. Junior Margaret Hoehl led the Generals by winning the
200 yard freestyle in a season-best time of 2:00.09 and also won the 200
yard backstroke in a time of 2:16.55. Finishing in second place for the
Generals were sophomore Lezael Haynes in the 200 yard individual medley
and senior Megan Wiedmaier in the 500 yard freestyle.
Emory 102.5, W&L 25.5
Johns Hopins 117, W&L 20
January 25, 1998 -- Chapel Hill, N.C.
Despite a record-setting effort from junior Margaret Hoehl, Washington
and Lee's women's swimming team dropped meets to Emory and Johns Hopkins
on Sunday. Hoehl swam a time of 4:46.41 to shave over three seconds off
of Rebekah Prince's 1993 school record time of 4:49.88 in the 400 yard
individual medley. Hoehl also swam a lifetime best time of 2:00.26 in the
200 yard freestyle. Sophomore Lauren McKeever also swam a season-best
time of 1:14.69 in the 100 breast and W&L's 200 medley relay team set a
new season best mark of 2:01.30.
W&L 138, Radford 97
January 21, 1998 -- Radford, Va.
Margaret Hoehl won three events to lead Washington and Lee to a 138-97
victory over Radford in women's swimming on Wednesday eveving. The
Generals improved to 7-3 with the victory. W&L also had two double
winners at the meet - Lezael Haynes and Megan Wiedmaier. The Generals
return to action on January 25 when they swim against Emory University
and Johns Hopkins University in a tri-meet at the University of North
Carolina-Chapel Hill.
W&L 96, Goucher 66
Catholic 129, W&L 70
January 17, 1998
W&L won every race to easily defeat Goucher 96-66 and improve to
6-2 for the season on Saturday morning. Allison Harvey, Bligh Wollner,
Lezael Haynes, Taryn Kiekow, Margaret Hoehl, Kendall Cruickshanks, Megan
Wiedmaier and Lauren McKeever all won individual races for the Generals.
In the afternoon meet the Generals fell to Catholic 129-70
despite a great day from Hoehl who won the 200 (2:02.47), 500 (5:27.62) and
1,000 (11:07.01) yard freestyle events. Second place finishers for the the
Generals included McKeever in the 200 IM, Haynes in the 200 back and Kiekow
in the 100 freestyle.
W&L 106, Buffalo State 66
January 13, 1998
The Generals won their fourth straight meet to improve to 5-2 for
the season, defeating Buffalo State 106-66. Junior Margaret Hoehl set two
meet records to lead the Generals to the victory. Hoehl won the 200
freestyle in a time of 2:02.58 to break Rebekah Prince's mark of 2:03.03
and she also won the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:27.94 to break Megan
Wiedmaier's mark of 5:36.75. W&L swims at Catholic and Goucher on Saturday.
W&L 98.5, Marymount 87.5
December 10, 1997
W&L rallied for a 98.5-87.5 victory over Marymount in the Cy
Twombly Pool on Wednesday. W&L trailed by six points with three events to
go, but won the final three events to earn the 11 and a half point
victory. W&L clinched the win by winning the final event, the 200 yard
freestyle relay, by just 7/100ths of a second. Freshman Allison Havery
swam the anchor leg on that winning relay and also won the 200 yard
freestyle (2:06.82) and 100 yard freestyle (59.15).
Winning three events for the Generals was junior Margaret Hoehl.
Hoehl captured the 400 yard individual medley (4:51.96, just two seconds
off the school record), 100 butterfly (1:04.03) and the 500 yard
freestyle (5:34.93).
W&L has won three straight meets to carry a 4-2 record into the
exam break. The Generals will be idle until hosting Buffalo State on
January 13.
W&L 91, Randolph-Macon Woman's College 29; W&L 85, Sweet Briar 36
December 2, 1997 -- Lexington, Va.
The Generals extended their ODAC dual meet winning streak to 30
consecutive meets, by defeating Randolph-Macon Woman's College 91-29 and
Sweet Briar 85-36 in a double dual meet on Tuesday evening in the Cy
Twombly Pool. Senior co-captain Bligh Wollner and junior Margaret Hoehl
were each triple winners for W&L, as Wollner won the 100 yard free
(1:00.28), the 200 yard free (2:09.52) and the 500 yard free (5:52.75),
while Hoehl won the 200 yard butterfly (2:22.59), the 200 yard backstroke
(2:22.63) and the 200 yard individual medley (2:23.16). Lauren McKeever
also swam well for the Generals, as she won the 100 yard breaststroke
(1:15.21) and the 200 yard breaststroke (2:50.44). The Generals will host
Marymount next Wednesday at 6:00 PM, and then will be off until winter term.
Sewanee 124, W&L 81
November 15, 1997 -- Sewanee, Tenn.
Washington and Lee's women's swimming team lost to Sewanee 124-81 on
Saturday to fall to 1-2 for the season. Junior Margaret Hoehl was a
triple winner, as she won the 200-yard free (2:03.49), the 500 yard free
(5:30.82) and the 1000 free (11:18.42). Brooke Stanley won the 50 free
(24.95) and the 100 free (54.91). The Generals will swim again next
weekend, as they compete in the Hollins Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
W&L 118, Centre 79
November 8, 1997 -- Lexington, Va.
Washington and Lee evened its record at 1-1 with a 118-79 victory over
Centre in women's swimming on Saturday. Junior Margaret Hoehl and
freshman Allison Harvey each won two races for the Generals. Hoehl won
the 200 IM (2:22.72) and the 500 freestyle (5:35.54) and Harvey won the
100 freestyle (59.38) and 200 freestyle (2:07.76).
Transylvania 109, W&L 96
November 1, 1997 -- Lexington, Va.
Washington and Lee's women's swimming team lost their opening
meet of the season by a final score of 109-96 to Transylvania University
on Saturday. Margaret Hoehl led the way for the Generals, as she won the
200-yard free (2:04.52), the 200-yard back (2:20.02) and the 1000-yard
free (11:24.52). Brooke Stanley was a double winner for W&L, as she
won the 50-yard free (24.63) and the 100-yard free (55.22). Stanley's
24.63 in the 50-yard free bettered the NCAA "B" cut time. W&L will host
Centre College next Saturday at 2:00 PM.
