AMHERST,
Va. -- Washington and Lee claimed all six singles flights and all three doubles
flights to win its 11th straight ODAC Championship on Sunday afternoon at Sweet
Briar College.
The Generals were followed by Hollins (2nd), Roanoke (3rd), Bridgewater (4th), Virginia Wesleyan (5th), Sweet Briar (6th), Lynchburg (6th), Eastern Mennonite (8th), Emory & Henry (9th), Randolph-Macon Woman's College (10th) and Randolph-Macon (11th).
Leading the way for W&L was junior Melissa Hatley (Columbia, S.C./Heathwood Hall), who took the championship of the No. 1 singles bracket by defeating Roanoke's Ashley Flemming, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Hatley was named the ODAC Player of the Year.
Sophomore Erika Proko (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) won the No. 2 singles bracket with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Cayce Schnare of Hollins. Sophomore Laura Bruno (Roswell, Ga./Chattahoochee) claimed the No. 3 singles bracket with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Hollins' Alice Moss. At No. 4 singles, sophomore Alyson Brice (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas Episcopal) defeated Liz Schnare of Hollins, 6-0, 6-1, while sophomore Brandi Jane Wedgeworth (Hilton Head, S.C./Hilton Head Christian) defeated Hollins' Kendra Perry, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Freshman Elizabeth Law (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) claimed the No. 6 singles championship with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Victoria Scavo of Virginia Wesleyan.
In doubles, Hatley and Proko defeated Stephenson and Moss of Hollins, 6-3, 6-1 to claim the championship of the No. 1 bracket. Bruno and junior Sallie Gray Strang (Chattanooga, Tenn./Girls Prep) teamed up to defeat Hollins' sister duo of Schnare and Schnare, 6-1, 6-0 for the No. 2 bracket championship and Law and freshman Ellie Simpson (Bluefield, Va./Graham) defeated Goodwin and McKenzie of Bridgewater, 6-1, 6-2.
