May 8, 1997 -- NCAA Division III Championships @ Claremont, California
The Generals lost 6-3 to Kenyon in the national semifinals on
Thursday, and will now play for third place against Emory on Friday. W&L
trailed 2-1 after doubles, and needed to win four singles matches to keep
their national championship hopes alive. The Generals won the first set
in four of the six singles matches, but could only come away with two
victories, and eventually fell to Kenyon 6-3. The Generals are now 17-4
for the season, and will finish up dual match play in the third place
match on Friday at 8:00 am Pacific Time.

W&L advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA D-III championships
for the third straight season, by defeating Gustavus Adolphus 6-3 on
Wednesday. The Generals led 2-1 after doubles play, and held a slim 4-3
lead with two matches still in progress, but Natalia Garcia and Berry
Blankinship each won three set matches to seal the victory for W&L. With
the win, W&L is now 17-3 for the season, and will face Kenyon on Thursday
in the national semifinals at 9:00 am pacific time.

The Generals began their pursuit of a national championship with
an 8-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer. W&L led 2-1 after doubles play, but then
swept all six singles matches, three of which were three set matches, to
take the 8-1 victory and improve to 16-3 for the season, and will play
Gustavus Adolphus in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

W&L 1st of 11 teams at ODAC Championdhips
April 25-27, 1997 -- Sweet Briar Va.
The Generals won their seventh straight Old Dominion Athletic
Conference championship this weekend, defeating second place Guilford by
28 points. The Generals swept all six singles flights and all three
doubles flights to score 68 points, while Guilford placed second with 40
points and Hollins third with 39 points. Natalia Garcia was named the
ODAC Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, as she won
titles at both #1 singles and #1 doubles. Other winners for W&L were
Ericka Shapard (#2 singles), Berry Blankinship (#3 singles), Brook
Hartzell (#4 singles), Anna O'Connor (#5 singles), Erin Eggers (#6
singles), Garcia/Hartzell (#1 doubles), Blankinship/Shapard (#2 doubles)
and Mary Celeste Foster/O'Connor (#3 doubles). The Generals will continue
their season on May 6, when they play Pomona Pitzer in the first round of
the NCAA Division III Championships in Claremont, California.
W&L 8, Sewanee 1
April 19, 1997 -- Sewanee, Tenn.
W&L, ranked fourth in the country and second in the south region,
picked up a big 8-1 victory over Sewanee, who came into the match ranked
13th in the country and third in the south region. With the win, the
Generals finish the regular season with a 15-3 overall mark, and will
head into next weekend's Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament with
a perfect 9-0 conference record.

The Generals picked up their seventh consecutive win to improve
to 10-2 for the season with a 5-4 victory over Mary Washington. W&L,
ranked fourth in the country and second in the south region, won two of
three doubles matches to go up 2-1 heading into singles, and with Natalia
Garcia winning in straight sets, and Berry Blankinship and Erin Eggers
each winning tough three set matches, the Generals held on for the 5-4
victory over Mary Washington, ranked 14th nationally and fourth in the
south region.
